In this walkthrough guide to unlocking and mastering Root’s Dream Diary in NO-SKIN, you’ll find detailed code lists and solutions to the game’s challenging puzzles.

Root’s Dream Diary: Puzzle Codes & Walkthrough Guide

Throughout Root’s Dream Diary, the most critical screen you encounter features three numbers. I discovered that the correct input of various three-digit codes is essential to progressing through this puzzle diary. Below, I list all the codes I found arranged roughly in the order I recommend you try them.

Starter & Puzzle Codes

  • Starter Code: 327
How I got it: Found by breaking the percentage and listening to the phone. (It’s unclear if this is chance-based or predetermined by the number of calls.)

  • Puzzle Codes (obtained from the previous room):

    1. 676
    2. 066
    3. 518
  • Final Code: 124
How I got it: Acquired in the room after entering code 518 and meeting the requirements.

Other Story Codes

  • 721
Found in: Room 676 (via textures above Root).
Note: A nod to the cool “Deer Man” character—he’s very much alive!

Fun/Interesting Codes

These are extra codes I discovered through experimentation. I encourage you to try them and share any new findings:

  • 000 – The Void. Literally, only Root and her reflection exist here.
  • 404 – ERX0R.
  • 808 – “Come join us at the bar?”
  • 999 – The End? The credits roll here; it’s as beautiful as the game itself.

Pro Tip: I’m not entirely sure if these codes must be entered in the order I’ve listed. I plan to test this further—feel free to share your findings!

Non-Functioning Numbers

For those who love testing every possibility, here are some 3-digit combinations that so far do nothing:

  • 001 to 010 (RIP 007)
  • 069 (nice)
  • 080 (balanced as all things should be)
  • 101 (lol)
  • 104 (common US police code)
  • 111
  • 143 (ILY – “I love you” abbreviated)
  • 169 (a cube number, a palindrome, and the sum of 7 consecutive numbers)
  • 200
  • 222
  • 314 (if only we had some pi at the end of time…)
  • 333 (the angels cry—no faith remains)
  • 365 (days in a year)
  • 366 (days in a leap year)
  • 411 (information, apparently)
  • 420 (apparently, no recreational substances here—even if those gummy bears pack a punch)
  • 444
  • 555
  • 666 (the devil’s cry—nothing left to burn)
  • 683 (the inverse of 327, not counting zeros)
  • 707 (lol, but upside down!)
  • 777 (JACKPOT, MORE VOID!)
  • 827 (the inverse of the starter code)
  • 850 (a perfect credit score—unattainable for me!)
  • 888
  • 933 (the inverse of puzzle code 066)
  • 995 to 998

Unlocking Root’s Dream Diary

Before you can enter any codes, you must unlock Root’s Dream Diary. Here’s how I did it:

  1. Beat the Deer-Headed Man as Root:

    • Tip: Talk to Deer Man and accept his challenge before you hit 60% progress.
  2. Defeat Meadow at 148%:

    • Strategy: Master Root’s unique mechanics and focus on stacking a decent amount of HP. With only 3 HP, neither Meadow nor the Deer-Headed Man can be defeated—even with a flurry of inventory damage items.

Note: This guide doesn’t cover the process of unlocking the diary itself, so you might want to look for a separate guide if you need more details on that front.

Walkthrough

If you’re a bit stuck, here’s my step-by-step walkthrough for the Dream Diary puzzle. Warning: This section contains major spoilers!

The Journey Begins

As you progress through the game, you’ll eventually unlock Root—whether by sheer luck or design. Playing as Root, you’ll encounter the Deer-Headed Man, accept his challenge, and eventually trigger the end-of-the-world sequence. During this progression, you come across a telephone room where a line mentions remembering the number 327.

  • 327 is the starting code, but you can’t use it immediately.
  • Continue playing as Root until you defeat Meadow. Once Meadow is down, Root’s Dream Diary becomes accessible.

Entering the Dream Diary

The diary opens with a surreal scene featuring Meadow and the Deer-Headed Man (whom I affectionately call “Deer”). In this sequence, as Root awakens, you see several floating numbers. Approaching any of them allows you to change the digits using the directional arrows. That’s when you know—you can finally input codes!

Testing the Codes

  1. Input 327:

    • Doing so transports you to another telephone room. A brief conversation on the phone reveals three more codes: 066, 518, and 676.
    • This sets the stage for the real puzzle.
  2. Trying Code 066:

    • I attempted this first, following the natural order. However, it led me to an enemy with just a bit too much health for me to defeat—no matter what strategy I tried.
    • Important: Do not try to sprint past it. The only solution is to approach the room at full health. If you take any damage, you’ll need to reset your progress in that section.
  3. Room 518:

    • This room, though anticlimactic, features the headless man (the one you might recall from the “breaking the percentage” section). He’s simply waiting for someone to deliver 95 crimson shards.
    • Goal: Collect the shards and prepare for the next step.
  4. Room 676:

    • In this room, I encountered an annoyingly pesky mosquito enemy.
    • Battle Tip: As Root, my base gun damage is only 2, and this enemy has 3 health—making it an easy fight if you avoid using mutations. Any damage taken here will jeopardize your ability to clear the next stage, so resist buffing your damage or accuracy.
    • Reward: Defeating the mosquito yields an HP pill, which is crucial for surviving the subsequent encounter.
  5. Revisiting Code 066:

    • Now, with the HP boost from the pill, I faced the enemy again. This enemy inflicts 2 damage, so timing your use of the pill is vital—use it before the enemy’s second attack, or you’ll be defeated.
    • Alternative: Some players rely on precise dodging or “praying to the moon” (blocking the attack) to survive the set pattern of the Child of Root enemy.
  6. Final Revelation:

    • After defeating the enemy and collecting all available crimson shards, I confronted the headless man one last time. This granted me the divine knowledge of the final code: 124.
    • Entering 124 opens the last story room, where I had a poignant conversation with Meadow. Though the ending felt unfinished, it left hints of possible future secrets (and don’t forget to experiment with code 808—a personal favorite!).

Interesting Bugs & Interactions

While exploring Root’s Dream Diary, I came across some odd interactions that are worth mentioning:

  1. Headless Man Glitch:

    • If you continue talking to the headless man after collecting the required shards, he will keep deducting shards—even sending your total into the negatives. Exiting and re-entering the room prevents this.
  2. Lunar Shards Display:

    • The lunar shards are shown in the diary—a direct copy of the game’s UI. It might be a hint toward a yet-to-be-discovered room.
  3. Child of Root’s Medkit:

    • Defeating the Child of Root awards you a medkit. This could indicate that it functions as a mini-boss or a significant enemy in Root’s narrative.
  4. The Mysterious Telephone:

    • Answering the telephone raises questions about Root’s identity—possibly linking her to the yellow-eyed lady/snake. The telephone operator clearly knows her well.
  5. Unfinished Story Clue:

    • Meadow’s remark about the story being unfinished might hint at future content or simply be a meta-commentary on the game’s narrative.
  6. Your Code Could Be Next:

    • Have you discovered another secret code? Let me know in the comments, and I’ll update this guide with credits to your find!
  7. Changing Crosses in the Code Room:

    • Notice the two crosses in the code input room? Their appearance sometimes changes, which could be purely aesthetic—or perhaps they symbolize that even at the end of the world, faith remains.
